Document signer FAQs.
Before you sign.
How to sign documents online, create a free electronic signature and download your PDF without an added watermark. Start with seven exports per verified email.
How to sign a document online?+
Save your document as a PDF, then open it in an online document signer. With Free Document Signer, create an account, verify your email and choose your PDF. Draw, type or upload your signature, place it on the page, and add any text or dates. Review the document, confirm the signing terms and download the signed copy.
What can I use to sign a document online?+
You can use a browser-based PDF signer such as Free Document Signer to add a visible electronic signature without installing an app. If your document is in Word or Google Docs, export it as a PDF first. If the recipient requires a digital certificate, identity verification or a multi-person signing workflow, choose a service that supports those requirements.
How to sign a document online for free?+
Create a Free Document Signer account and verify your email to receive seven free document exports once per verified email. Open a PDF, add your signature, accept the signing terms and download it. Each new export uses one credit; adding multiple signatures or pages to that export does not use extra credits. No credit card is required for the free allowance.
What is a signer of a document called?+
A person who signs a document is called a signer or signatory. When someone signs on behalf of an organisation or another person, they may be called an authorised signatory. Using that title does not itself give someone permission to sign; they need the appropriate authority.
Is there a free document signer?+
Yes. Free Document Signer includes seven free PDF exports once per verified email after account creation and email verification. You can draw, type or upload a signature and download the signed PDF within that allowance. It is not unlimited free signing: further exports require a one-time credit purchase.
Can I create an e-signature for free?+
Yes. An e-signature is an electronic signature. In Free Document Signer, you can draw, type or upload a signature and place that visible mark on a PDF. Create an account and verify your email for seven free PDF exports, with no credit card required. Creating and placing your signature does not use a credit; exporting uses one. Further exports require a one-time credit pack, not a subscription. This tool does not create certificate-based digital signatures.
Can I sign a PDF for free without a watermark?+
Yes, within your seven free exports once per verified email. Free Document Signer does not add a visible watermark, logo or promotional footer to your signed PDF, on either free or paid exports. You do not need to buy credits to remove our branding from the page. Existing watermarks or other content already in your original PDF are not removed.
How much does a PDF signer cost?+
On Free Document Signer, your first seven exports are free once per verified email. Additional packs cost US$1 for 5 credits, US$3 for 20 credits or US$5 for 50 credits. One new document export uses one credit. Credits do not expire, and there is no subscription. Other PDF signing services have their own prices and features.
How do I sign a document that was emailed to me?+
If the email contains a PDF attachment you trust, save it to your device and open it in Free Document Signer after signing in. Add your signature, review the pages and download the signed copy, then attach that copy to your reply manually. Email me a copy only sends to your own verified account email, not to the original sender. If you received a signing-service link instead of a PDF, follow the sender’s signing instructions.
How do I create a digital signature?+
If you mean a visible electronic signature, you can draw your signature, type your name or upload a signature image in Free Document Signer and place it on your PDF. A certificate-based digital signature is different: it requires a digital ID or certificate and compatible signing software that cryptographically binds the signature to the document. Free Document Signer does not create certificate-based digital signatures.
Can I just write my name for an electronic signature?+
You can type or draw your name to create a visible electronic signature in this tool. Whether that is sufficient depends on your intention to sign, the document, applicable law and the recipient’s requirements. Writing a name is not a guarantee of legal validity. Free Document Signer does not verify identity, notarise documents or provide a certified audit trail.
Is there a free way to create a handwritten signature?+
Yes. After creating and verifying your Free Document Signer account, use the drawing option to write your signature with a mouse, finger or stylus, then place it on your PDF. You can also upload an image of a signature you wrote on paper. Creating or placing the signature does not use a credit; exporting the signed PDF does. Your first seven exports are free once per verified email.
Is this a document signer app I need to install?+
Free Document Signer is a web app. Open it in your browser, sign in to your verified account and choose a PDF from your device. There is no app installation or browser extension required.
What counts as one document?+
One export uses one credit, regardless of the number of pages or signatures. Downloading the identical prepared copy again from the completion screen is free. Editing and exporting another version uses another credit.
Where are my documents stored?+
In the current browser tab while you work, and on your device when you save the download. Signing and downloading do not upload the PDF. If you choose Email me a copy, the finished PDF passes through our server and email provider with your consent. Closing or refreshing the tab loses unsaved changes.
Can I sign a Word document or image?+
The document must be a PDF. Use Word’s Export or Save as PDF option first. PNG, JPG, and WebP files can be used as signature images, but not as the document itself.
Can I change size without stretching my signature?+
Yes. Proportions are locked by default. Select a field and drag its corner handle to resize. Turn off Lock proportions to stretch it freely. Undo and redo are available in the toolbar and with standard keyboard shortcuts.
Does this support several signers?+
No. This is a solo-signer tool. Optional email delivery sends a finished copy to your verified account email; it is not a signature request. It does not email requests, verify recipients, provide signing order, or maintain a certified audit trail.
Why won’t my PDF open?+
The editor accepts PDFs up to 50 MB and 200 pages. Password-protected files, detected signature fields, and dynamic XFA forms are not supported. Export a fresh, unsigned PDF from the original application.
How do I restore paid credits?+
Sign in with your email and password. If you never set a password or forgot it, use an email code and set a password in My account. Your free and paid balance follows that account across devices. Documents do not transfer.
Can I use a phone or tablet?+
The editor supports touch drawing, placement, and resizing. On iPhone or iPad, a PDF may open in a viewer instead of downloading directly. Use Share and Save to Files. Larger PDFs need more device memory.
Do you remove confidential information from PDFs?+
No. This is not a redaction or sanitisation tool. Adding a signature or text does not remove hidden content, attachments, metadata, or text underneath it.
What if my download fails?+
Keep the editor tab open. The completion screen has a Download again button that does not charge another credit. If the payment or credit service fails, retry the same export without editing to avoid using another credit.
